Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
